An Ottoman-Mamluk war took place between 1485-1491, when the Ottoman Empire invaded the Mamluk Sultanate territories of Anatolia and Syria.[1] This war was an essential event in the Ottoman struggle for the domination of the Middle-East.[2]
The Mamluks had been in opposition to the Ottomans, as both realms competed for the control of the Holy Cities of Islam, as well as for control of the Spice trade.[3] For two decades before the war erupted, the Mamluks and Ottoman had been in dispute over the buffer Turkmen states.[4]
The dispute was postponed during the time Uzun Hassan and Karaman existed.[5] However, the Ottomans invasion of Karaman in 1468 (and formal annexation in 1487) put them in direct contact with the Mamluks, as well as with the state of Dulgadir.[5]
Plans had apparently already been made for a campaign against Cairo as early as 1481.[3] The Ottoman Sultan Bayezid had strong enimity towards the Mamluks, resulting from the Mamluk seizure of an Ottoman ambassador who was returning from India with an Indian ambassador to his father Mehmed II.[3]
Ottoman-Mamluk enemity also further developed when the Mamluks assisted Sultan Cem in his revolt against the Ottoman Sultan.[5]
The Mamluks attempted to establish a friendly regime in Dulgadir, by replacing ruler Alauddevle, but the latter fled to the Ottomans requesting the assistance assitance of the Ottoman Governor of Kayseri.[5] This led to the Ottoman invasion of Mamluk territory and the beginning of the Ottoman-Mamluk war.[5]
